Holy Thursday
• Before the Paschal Triduum begins we break our “Lenten Fast” with a time of food and fellowship. The early Church always joined the Eucharist with an “Agape” or Love Feast, which was like an original Potluck Meal. • While our Hospitality Committee is so graciously supplying the soup, bread, and beverages, please add a salad, side dish, or dessert to our meal if you are able. The meal will be served until 7:00 pm at which time the kitchen will close so that we can observe our communion fast and ready ourselves to take part in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. 7:30 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Church) • We gather as one community of believers to begin our celebration of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. • We are invited to bring monetary “gifts for the poor” this night. As you enter church, a basket will be available for your offering to support the work of our local St. Vincent de Paul Society. • Keeping with the Gospel invitation of Jesus to do as He did, we will have the opportunity tonight to wash each other’s feet. All will be invited to come forward, if they choose, to have their feet washed and then wash others. Let's keep in mind the wonderful lesson of washing the feet of others, which symbolizes our serving others with humility and without imposing our own conditions. Jesus tells us to emulate His actions in this simple ceremony: "For I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do”. • Oils received from the Bishop at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday are presented to the parish. • At the conclusion of Mass the Eucharist is transferred out of the church. Led by the servers and choir, all are invited to take part in the solemn procession to the School Cafeteria where the Eucharist will be reposed in a specially prepared Chapel of Reposition. 9:00 PM – 11:00 PM Adoration of the Eucharist (Cafeteria) • Just as Jesus invited Peter, James, and John to pray with him on the night before his death in the Garden of Gethsemane—so too, do we keep watch and pray on this night. “Make a visit” with your family, friends, or on your own this night. • After the Mass, the church is stripped and emptied. Good Friday
• On this day of fast and abstinence we recall solemnly the Lord’s acceptance of the cross. We do so in the middle of the day—close to the hour when our Lord suffered and died. This day is unlike all others. The Passion from John’s Gospel is read, the Cross is venerated and although this is the only day in the year when Mass may not be celebrated—there is the reception of Holy Communion which was reserved from the Mass on Thursday night. • The Cross remains in the church for prayer and devotion during the remainder of the afternoon and early evening. 6:00 PM Vespers and Veneration of the Cross (Church) • The Church mourns the death of the Lord throughout the day. For those unable to take part at the noon liturgy, an opportunity to venerate the cross is provided in the context of our evening prayer. Good Friday

• After nightfall we gather outside around the new fire. Christ, our Paschal Light, leads us into the darkened, lifeless church. Slowly, his light is shared through our common baptism. The church begins to glow and live once again. We sing our Easter praises! • After hearing portions of our Salvation History in the Liturgy of the Word, we experience salvation in the waters of baptism and in the oil of confirmation. • Our vigil is made complete with the Eucharist. • Our newly initiated members of the Church are honored with a reception in the Steinbauer Community Room, where all are welcome to share in their joy! If you would like to donate an hors d’oeuvre or dessert for this reception please leave word with Connie Hartle at 419.666.9705 or 419.340.8308 so that we can plan accordingly. | |||
